I worked from Buenos Aires for the first week and a half of a longer trip through Argentina, Brazil and Chile, so this is a city I saw in evenings and on weekends rather than in full days. May is autumn here, which thinned the crowds everywhere, but it was still very lively.
Eat
A rooftop asado with wine pairing
A rooftop asado experience with wine. It wasn't a classic asado, but it was a good way to learn about and experience one with a guide and a cook who explained everything. The food was great, and it was a good way to meet people.
Tasting menu at Fogón Asado
A unique tasting menu focusing on typical Argentine asado fare. I was able to book a few weeks out, and enjoyed the experience. I did a wine pairing, and if you put your empty glass on top of the counter, they'll keep filling it.
The Food Truck Store
This place had a solid burger, it's worth it if you're craving one.
Pizzeria Guerrin
A great spot to try the Argentine pizza.
El Gauchito
This place had really good empanadas.
La Perla de Caminito
Sit outside here with a choripan and enjoy the vibes.
Drink
Darsena Bar
A couple of locals took us here, and we had a great time. We didn't drink any fancy cocktails, but the vibes were fun. They had a DJ playing some reggaeton, and people were enjoying the dance floor.
The Hole Bar — Alcatraz Speakeasy
A themed bar done properly, and a unique one coming from San Francisco.
Uptown
Another cool themed bar, this time based on a NYC subway. It was quite elaborate, and the drinks were solid.
Do
Intimate underground tango show, Secreto Tango Society
A small room, and unlimited wine. They're dancing right in front of you, so it was a nice way to experience Tango. There's a lot of other options to see it, but I thought this was worth it.
San Telmo Market
Check out the indoor mercado, and the street market on Sundays.
Free Walking tours of Buenos Aires
I did one as soon as I arrived, and a night one later on in the week. I always try to start a trip with a walking tour, as it's a good way to meet people and get a feel for the city.
